About Us
Mission Statement
Project Red is a High School club based in the International School of Bangkok in Thailand, that aims to highlight and eradicate the issue of stigma against menstruation through advocacy, education, and service. Our top priority is making resources available for menstruators in rural Thailand with limited access to period products and safe spaces. At the moment, this is being done in collaboration with Days for Girls Hua Hin.
Our Fight
Ancient myths have established that menstruation is obscene and shall never be pronounced by anyone. This natural process had been used as an excuse to discriminate against menstruators, including women and the LGBTQ+ community. With minimum or no access to support they are embarrassed to go out and forced to stop their education. In some parts of the world hygiene is neglected as they lack proper access to mental products and they have to use resources such as leaves and rags. This is also due to the “pink tax” which follows the purchase of any female-branded products that are essentially identical to products that men also use, such as razors. According to The Guardian, an average woman spends more than $22,000 in the period of 40 years, which is an average of the menstruation process. Basic rights are stripped as a result of something that menstruators have no control over.
It is also imperative to know that women are not the only ones who go through periods. Many indivisuals from the queer community, such as transgender men, also menstrurate. Due to its recent recognition from scholars and healthcare providers little is known about their attitude towards and experiences with menstruation.
